WHAT IS CRANIOSACRAL THERAPY?

WHAT IS CRANIOSACRAL THERAPY?

CranioSacral Therapy is a bodywork modality that directly works on the bones of the head, spine and sacrum along with the dural tube, cerebral spinal fluid and nerves. Through the use of light touch to the tissues of the body and to the bones of the head, spine and sacrum the strength and rhythm of the cerebrospinal fluid’s movement is evaluated, restrictions in the membranes are identified and corrected.

HOW DOES IT WORK?

Light touch is applied to the body to directly affect the ebb and flow of the cerebral spinal fluid and the expansion and contraction of the bones. CranioSacral Therapy supports the body to correct imbalances, release restrictions, and strengthen the body’s ability to heal itself. If there is restriction in the cerebral membranes, dural tube, or bones of the head, spine, or sacrum, the flow of the cerebral spinal fluid can be impeded. This prevents the nerves in the head and spine from being nourished and lubricated potentially causing any number of sensory, motor or neurological disorders including those effecting the eyes, nose, ears, memory, motor-coordination, learning functions or other health challenges.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS?

• Support neurological functions of the body

• Release long-stored emotions and trauma

• Recover from physical, emotional, or mental injury or abuse

• Improved resistance to disease and stress

• Provide balance and calmness

• Improved overall health

WHAT HAPPENS IN A CRANIOSACRAL THERAPY SESSION?

A CranioSacral Therapy session is generally about 60 to 90 minutes in length. The practitioner palpates the body’s craniosacral rhythm using a light touch to evaluate the movement of the cerebral spinal fluid, the bones, and to determine where restrictions are. Then through light touch to the body’s tissues and bones the restrictions are removed, allowing the body to come into balance. Sometimes deep-seated emotions or memories from a past trauma are released. The client is supported in a safe and caring environment to allow these to be released completely. (For more information on emotional release, see the Somato-Emotional Release section.)

HOW MUCH IS NEEDED?

A single session is very relaxing although is usually not enough to fully address a client’s situation. Each individual’s needs are different and unique to themselves. For most people who want to experience the benefits of CranioSacral Therapy, I recommend a session every week for three weeks and then once every four to six weeks or as needed for ‘tune-up’ and maintenance. For more specific therapeutic purposes or more serious cases CranioSacral Therapy should be received on an ongoing basis, at least once a week if not more frequently until the body is able to hold the body in proper alignment. Because of its gentleness it can be received on a daily basis when working with more severe situations.
